A tribute to our friend Al Matlack
We are saddened to learn about the recent passing of our friend Al Matlack, who was so very committed to improving our understanding of the natural world and to conservation. We received the following in a message from his children that we would like to share:
Members of the Delaware environmental community;
It is with great sadness that we announce the recent death of our father,
Albert S. Matlack. He died peacefully, and was physically active and fully
engaged with his favorite causes until the very day of his death.
Dad was physically slowed in his last few years, but his passion for the
environment and the effort he focused upon conservation were in no way
diminished. His life was an energetic and productive one, made possible and
greatly enriched by his years of interactions with the many other people in
Delaware devoted to environmental causes. He derived both pleasure and
satisfaction from working with you. There is no question that he would derive
comfort from knowing that you continue your efforts.
We will hold a memorial service sometime in the spring. If you would like to
attend please contact us at one of the addresses below.
With our best regards,
Kent ES Matlack
Glenn R Matlack
Many of us interacted with Al, or even worked closely with him, through his advocacy and civic engagement, as President of The Society of Natural History of Delaware, his work in green chemistry as an adjunct professor at the University of Delaware, or his other scholarly endeavors.
His love of the environment, of science, and of the preservation of our natural resources will continue on in our efforts. We share our warmest thoughts with his family, friends and colleagues an our fond memories of his contribution to conservation.
