Volunteer Opportunities with the Delaware Chapter

The Sierra Club is the nation's oldest and largest grassroots environmental group. We are one of the most effective environmental organizations around for one reason only: because of our amazing members and supporters. We are a 100% volunteer lead organization and we are always looking for new leaders to help make even more amazing stuff happen! The Sierra Club supports and relies on our volunteers.

There are many opportunities to volunteer with the Delaware Chapter including: tabling at events; participating or leading an outing; taking action through advocacy alerts on critical issues (including calls, letters, Op-Eds, and signing petitions); helping to elect progressive, pro-environmental politicians; participating in events; joining one of our committees or teams; or serving in a leadership role. Check out the ways below to become involved.

We have several committees that any Sierra Club member can become a part of and make a HUGE impact. A list of our committees is included below. There are also TONS of ways you can get involved outside of our traditional committees--or even start your own! We are actively seeking new outings leaders to lead small groups of Sierrans on outdoor activities of your choosing. We are always in need of help with entering data and doing work around our office or planning fundraisers, education and/or membership events. There really is something for everyone and every interest. Please reach out to our Chapter at  to learn more or get involved with protecting our environment in Delaware!

Delaware Sierra Club Committees

Executive Committee:

The statewide work of the Delaware Sierra Club is directed by an Executive Committee of nine members, who are elected for two-year terms in the fall. Each "ExCom" term is for two years.  The Chapter's Executive Committee is responsible for all aspects of the Delaware Chapter, including setting priorities, overseeing environmental and chapter policies, fiscal management, and working with the National Sierra Club. The Executive Committee meets monthly on the third Monday at 6pm at the Community Service Building, room 104, unless otherwise noted (no meeting in December).

Climate and Energy Committee:

This Committee works to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Delaware and fight climate change through the legislative process as well as through education and outreach.  Our current focus is on expanding renewable energy and clean transportation solutions in the state. The Committee meets at 6:30 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at the Community Service Building in Wilmington, Delaware.  Check our calendar for more details.

Conservation Committee:

The Conservation Committee examines all other environmental issues except climate and energy.  Examples include water quality, plastic pollution, coastal zone preservation, biodiversity and native species, and other important environmental challenges.  We look at fracking and off-shore drilling issues as they relate to water quality.  During our legislative session, the Committee analyzes proposed legislation relating to the environment and recommends Chapter positions.  The Chapter's Conservation Committee is traditionally the flagship committee of any Sierra Club chapter, since of course we are a conservation organization. The Committee meets quarterly.

Fundraising Committee:

Like all nonprofit organizations, the Sierra Club is dependent on the generosity of its donors.  The Fundraising Committee helps to secure the resources that the Delaware Chapter needs to carry out its mission.  The Committee reaches out to members, donors and grantmakers, as well as participates in the planning of annual fundraising events.

Political Committee:

The Political Committee oversees our political program, including endorsing pro-environment candidates.  During election years, the Committee solicits responses to a survey from all legislative candidates to determine their positions on environmental issues.

Outreach Committee:

This Committee runs our outings program which encourages people to get outdoors to explore, enjoy and protect the planet.  Outings include hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, walking, rock climbing, and bird watching and offer different levels of intensity.  We rely on certified outings leaders to participate in outdoor events.   If you are interested in becoming a certified outings leader all you need to do is complete an easy training and be basic first aid certified.  The Committee also assists with special events, informational tabling opportunities, and membership development.
