Trans-Pacific Partnership Forum - What you need to know and what you can do about it. February 1st
The United States is currently negotiating an expansive free trade agreement, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) 11 other Pacific Rim nations (though many more could be added later). The details of the TPP have been kept so secretive that even members of Congress have not had access to its many chapters, though hundreds of huge corporations have been intimately involved with the writing and negotiations.
The Sierra Club and our coalition partners are deeply concerned about the lack of transparency in the TPP negotiations and the environmental and economic implications of the pact. For example, the TPP could:
- Allow corporation to sue governments in private tribunals over environmental and other laws and policies may reduce a corporate profits.
- Pave the way for increased fracking and LNG exports across the United States.
- Reduce the ability of governments to put in place policies to protect the climate, American workers, affordable access to medicines, regulate food safety and more.
