EPA is also worried about the loss of wetlands in Delaware

In a letter dated August 30, 2012, EPA Region III Administrator Shawn Garvin expressed his concern about the loss of Delaware's wetland resources.  He assured us that the EPA is working in collaboration with DNREC, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to better understand wetlands loss and to identify ways to prevent future loss.  Read his letter.

309 organizations call for improvements to the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI)

The Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) is a key part of most Northeast and Mid-Atlantic States’ strategy to reduce pollution from fossil fuels and shift to clean energy. By limiting carbon pollution from power plants, requiring emitters to buy permits to pollute and investing the revenues in energy efficiency and renewable energy, RGGI has helped states participating in the RGGI program meet our environmental and energy challenges while curbing dependence on fossil fuels and saving consumers money.

Fishery managment protections needed for American shad and river herrings

On May 31, 2012 the Delaware Chapter asked Governor Markell to strengthen management protections for American shad and river herrings. Delaware’s rivers and estuaries once supported abundant river herring and shad, providing opportunities for recreational fishing and an abundant food source for wildlife. Delaware recently implemented a moratorium on commercial and recreational fishing for river herring and a similar moratorium on American shad may be imminent. But more work needs to be done in federal waters to recover these depleted fish.

Lobby Reform Commission Needed

We thank Governor Markell for his leadership on SB 185, and for highlighting the need to update and strengthen Delaware’s lobbying law. Requiring lobbyists to disclose the numbers of the bills on which they are lobbying will give the public a better understanding of how public policy is shaped in Dover. And as a further benefit of the bill, we believe that an increased understanding of the role of lobbyists will inspire the public to want further reforms and more transparency.

Governor Markell's Campaign Commitment to Protect Freshwater Wetlands

While running for Governor in 2008, Jack Markell made a bold statement about actions that he would take to protect freshwater wetlands, including "significant investment of time and political capital," the formation of a "Wetlands Protection Work group" that would "have a mandate to develop recommendations within six months that specifically address how best to protect each category of wetlands in our state," and to initiate a dialogue about wetlands.

Meeting with Governor Markell for a Comprehensive Energy and Climate Plan

The Delaware Chapter of the Sierra Club joined a coalition of environmental groups in Delaware that sent a letter to Governor Markell on June 24, 2011 asking him to exercise leadership in the development and implementation of a comprehensive energy and climate change plan that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions and make Delaware “more resilient to the dangers of climate change for generations to come.” Most of these groups met with Governor Markell on February 1, 2012 to present information about the importance of proceeding with this effort. This report documents this endeavor, and provides a foundation for moving forward in the long-range comprehensive energy and climate change planning process.
