Environmental Justice is the link between the environment and social justice to resolve the disproportionate distribution of environmental risk (including negative health, social and economic effects) on communities. At the Sierra Club, we explore the linkages between environmental quality and social justice to promote dialogue, increased understanding and appropriate action.
Meeting about Refinery's tar sands rail project raises concerns about environmental risk and health, Feb 27, 2013

Nearly 200 people attended the Delaware City Refinery's open house on February 27, 2013 at Wilbur Elementary School to ask questions about the refinery's recent expansion of its crude-by-rail program, which is bringing Alberta tar sands and fracked shale oil from North Dakota by train.

Sierra Club opposes plan for remedial action at Burton Island Coal Ash Disposal Site

The Delaware Chapter of the Sierra Club opposes this Plan for Remedial Action for Operable Unit 2 of the Burton Island Ash Disposal Site.    

Delaware Sierra Club asks the Joint Finance Committee to fund air monitoring at Refinery

At the February 6th meeting of the Delaware General Assembly, the Delaware Chapter of the Sierra Club asked the Joint Finance Committee to consider the risks posed by the Delaware City Refinery on public health and to finance actions by DNREC to protect our communities.

Delaware City Refinery environmental justice forum draws crowd

Our Environmental Justice Summer Intern Lemir Teron presented the results of his summer research that investigated the Delaware City Refinery, its recently deferred billion-dollar expansion, and its new plans to import tar sands dilbit from Canada, at the Delaware City Public Library on Thursday, September 20, 2012.

Delaware City community trained on use of air monitors
Through a collaborative effort between Main Street Delaware City, the Delaware City Environmental Coalition, Global Community Monitor and the Delaware Chapter of the Sierra Club, the volunteers who will use citizen science air monitors were trained on their proper use, chain of custody and log sheets at the Delaware City Library on September 15, 2012.
