Same Day Voter Registration Bill Passes the House!
Here at The Sierra Club we support making democracy fair and open to all. We know that the groups & individuals trying restrict open and equal access to voting are the same ones pouring unlimited amounts of money into elections to try to buy our legislators---polluting our democracy and polluting our environment go hand in hand. That's why we support same-day voter registration. HB 105 would modernize Delaware code to allow the Department of Elections to process registration applications that change a registrant's address or name until the day of the election and SDR would eliminate the need for wasteful provisional ballots. We're thrilled to report that with the help of our members and great coalition partners HB passed the Delaware House of Representatives on 4/3!
Thank you to everyone who called your State Representatives! Now it's on to the Senate. Call or email your state senator to let them know you support SDR and want them to vote FOR HB 105, allowing for SDR in Delaware, without any unfair or restrictive amendments, like excluding primaries. These kinds of special exceptions don't protect anyone except incumbent legislators and make voting access more discriminatory to low income and young voters.
Check out this great Delaware-specific report from Demos to learn more about same-day registration and why we need it in Delaware for general AND primary elections. http://www.demos.org/sites/default/files/publications/SameDayRegistration
12 States currently allow for same day registration, including 3 who have had SDR since the mid 1970's. Those states consistently have some of the highest voter participation in the country and voter fraud has been repeatedly proven to not be a problem. Delaware has never had a problem with voter fraud and Delaware Commissioner of Elections, Elaine Manlove, says that she is confident SDR could be easily implemented in Delaware without these concerns. Election day registrants would be required to show all the same documentation as they would otherwise need at the DMV or other place of registration.
