Delaware Chapter Outings
Updated 7 May 2008
"People are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home;
that wilderness is a necessity; and that mountain parks and reservations are useful not
only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life."
John Muir

Spring 2007 Toddlers Annaliese, Shawn, Liam, Grace and Jonah take a break!
- Saturday Spring Toddles
April-May 2008
- Would you like to explore the great outdoors with your young ones in tow? These will be a series of
short hikes designed for those with short legs and endless curiosity. Hikes will be in White Clay
Preserve (New Castle County) and last approximately 1/2 to 1 hour. Contact Jenny Egan at 302-540-4546 or
jennifermegan28@msn.com.
- Trussum Pond, Delaware
Sunday, May 11 (rated easy)
- Join our Anne Arundel Maryland Group for a paddle through the northernmost cypress forest in the
USA on this small pond near Laurel, Delaware. View massive, old-growth cypress trees, waterfowl, beaver
and other swamp critters. Participants must supply their own kayak or canoe; Sierra Club requires all
participants to wear a PFD while on the water. Launch boats at 11 AM; trip should take an hour or two.
Heavy/steady rain or high wind cancels; rain date is May 17.

- Hiking Through History
Saturday, May 17, 10:00 a., Fort Delaware State Park & Port Penn
POSTPONED - - keep checking back for a future date
- Take a walk into Delaware's rich history with three short hikes (total distance under 4 miles) on the
Delaware River. We'll convene at 9:30 a.m. at the ferry parking lot in Delaware City (don't be late, the
ferry leaves at 10:00 and the next is an hour later). After a short ferry ride to Pea Patch Island, we'll hike
the Prison Camp Trail around Fort Delaware and explore this Civil War historic site. We'll return to the
shore and hike the nearby Riverview Trail in Fort DuPont State Park. Though this hike is not on the Trail
Challenge, it's an interesting bit of Delaware's military past. Then, we'll relocate four miles south to Port
Penn and hike the Wetlands Trail. We'll find some lunch afterward (maybe some seafood?).
