Trenton Anti-Fracking Rally, Nov 2011
The Delaware River Basin Commission announced that their November 21, 2011 meeting would include the vote on their proposed natural gas regulations for hydraulic fracturing, also known as "fracking." While the vote was cancelled, due to the announcement a few days before by Delaware's Governor Markell. Governor Markell took a strong stand for water quality and public health by opposing the Delaware River Basin Commissions regulations on natural gas in writing, because the proposed "regulations may not adequately safe guard our regional water supply by adopting best practices for water withdrawal, siting and setback requirements, drilling and construction standards, ongoing operational protections, and clean up protocols and financial assurances should a release occur." While the vote was cancelled, hundreds from Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Delaware poured into the city of Trenton for a rally at the War Memorial, followed by a second rally at the Capitol.
