Low Emission Vehicles: Public Comments Needed by 10/8
On September 23rd DNREC Division of Air Quality held a public workshop on their proposed changes to Delaware's Advanced Clean Cars Program. They will (hopefully) be adopting the Low Emission Vehicles portion of California's LEV III Program, something the Sierra Club strongly supports as a way to reduce hazardous air pollution from vehicles.
Delaware's air quality has consistently received failing grades from the American Lung Association and is not in compliance with the Clean Air Act. The transportation sector is the largest source of air pollution in our state. We are thrilled that DNREC is taking steps to address this huge source of air pollution by adopting better vehicle standards.
Unfortunately we recently found out that in response to pressure from the auto industry they will not be adopting the ZEV (Zero Emission Vehicles) portion of the CA standards. This is something we are very disappointed by and plan on commenting on at the upcoming public hearing. It is important to have as many allies of clean air in Delaware as possible at the public hearing to support the LEV standards and ask that the ZEV standards be adopted next.
We'll need as many clean air advocates as possible to submit comments in support of the proposed adoption of the LEV III CA Clean Cars Program and to also urge the Department to do more to protect air quality and climate stability by also adopting the ZEV standards. As a second ask to adopting the ZEV standards, we would ask that the Division of Energy and Climate (who we understand is in the process of coming up with some program now) complete a full stake holder process, which would include the Division of Air Quality, the environmental and health communities as well as industry representatives, on any new program(s) to promote Electric or Zero Emission Vehicles in Delaware.
The Public Comment Period is open until October 8th at 4pm. Email comments to Division of Air Quality at Deanna.email@example.com OR Lisa Vest, hearing officer at firstname.lastname@example.org, With the Subject Line: “Public Comments – 7 DE Admin C 1140”.
