Delaware City community trained on use of air monitors

Article

Through a collaborative effort between Main Street Delaware City, the Delaware City Environmental Coalition, Global Community Monitor and the Delaware Chapter of the Sierra Club, the volunteers who will use citizen science air monitors were trained on their proper use, chain of custody and log sheets at the Delaware City Library on September 15, 2012.  Testing will begin soon!

We are grateful for the community members of Delaware City and surrounding neighborhoods who will be citizen scientists and collect air samples for testing in a laboratory.  Information from this monitoring will be used to understand the composition and source of air contamination during pollution events.

Our bucket brigade volunteers, with Denny Larson from Global Community Monitor (on right).

Bucket brigade training took place at the Delaware City Library.

Volunteers learned how to use the buckets properly to collect scientifically valid samples.

Denny shows what a sample bag looks like after it is inflated.

Volunteers examine the valve mechanism on the sample bag.

A small electric cleaner is used to create a vacuum within the bag.

Adjusting the bag's valve with care.

A properly inflated is an exciting accomplishment.

More properly-inflated bags.

All volunteers tested the bags.

Denny provided hands-on instruction on the use of the buckets.

The ferrule valve is part of the instrument, which must be inserted properly.

Denny shows how to hold the bucket during windy days.
