Sierra Club Announces Endorsements

[Wilmington, DE] The Delaware Chapter of the Sierra Club announced today they are endorsing four candidates for state-level offices. Jay Cooperson, chapter chair revealed that Bryon Short (House District 7), John Kowalko (House District 25), Brian Bushweller (Senate District 17), and Jack Markell, candidate for Governor, have all received endorsements from the Sierra Club.

"The Chapter has not endorsed a state-level candidate in many years, but growing concern over air and water pollution, poor land use practices as well as the unaddressed challenges posed by global warming brought home the need to elect people to office who understand and want to act to address Delaware's environmental challenges," said Debbie Heaton, political committee chair.

The chapter political committee reviewed the races taking place across the state and chose four on which to focus. Discussions during the interviews with each of the candidates showed them to have a keen interest in conservation and a willingness to consider legislation that would support stronger environmental protections. In addition, John Kowalko and Bryon Short supported the wind farm project over the last session.

Jay Cooperson noted that "Both Bill Lee and Jack Markell would promote more protective environmental legislation while balancing the economic needs of the state. However, Jack Markell was an early supporter of the wind farm project and has included plans for addressing energy, the environment and climate change issues in his Blueprint for a Better Delaware. So we chose to endorse Jack and hope that everyone will get out and vote on November 4th."

The chapter's political activities leading up to the election also included creating a Voter's Scorecard, which compiles the voting records of incumbent legislators on key environmental votes in the last session of the General Assembly, and a Questionnaire, which gives those running for a seat in the General Assembly a framework for sharing their views on the environment. The results of both of these efforts can be found on the Sierra Club Delaware Chapter Political Committee website at delaware.sierraclub.org/PoliticalComm.
